Steps for Removing Spyware and Viruses:
Spyware, Worms, Viruses and Trojan Horses can be very difficult and dangerous to remove. Data loss is always a possibility anytime removing spyware, viruses, or any malicious software aka malware. The best method for removing a virus is to find out what virus the system is infected with before attempting disinfection. That is the more difficult solution and it won't be covered here. Some of the more recent worms are disabling certain system services. Specifically, the Windows update service, firewall service, system restore service. When these are disabled it will prevent the system from being updated via Windows update, prevent Windows firewall from running, and prevent the system from being restored to a previous date. The following steps are going to be best completed in safemode with networking.
Step 1
Backup any important data. Imaging your drive would be wise. (removing spyware and viruses MAY cause data loss!!!)
Step 2
Go to the spyware removal tutorial first as spyware is often times mistaken as a virus.

Step 3
Online Virus Scanner
NOD32 Online Virus Scanner. This is safe to run in conjunction with another virus scanner installed on the system. Probably best run in
Safemode with networking.
Step 4
Download and install newest version of
Firefox (a replacement for Internet Explorer). Firefox has a much better track record as far as security goes. It is updated more often and there are less attacks against Firefox. The odds of you getting spyware again after using Firefox are MUCH less likely. Due to Firefox not supporting ActiveX and less attacks being developed against the browser itself.
Download Firefox from the link below!
Step 5
Remove any outdated virus scanner on the system and only continue to step 6 if the virus scanner is outdated. (example Norton,
Mcafee) Outdated means that it no longer receives updates for virus signatures or the program is older like Norton Anti-Virus 2003 or 2004. DO NOT install more than one virus scanner for "full-time/resident scanning".
Step 6*
Get yourself a virusscanner! We recommend NOD32 if you need JUST a virus scanner and if you need a firewall AND a virusscanner we highly recommend Kaspersky. NEVER run more than one virus scanner or firewall at a time.
